Traffic regulations

Motorway and carriageway

Special rules for traffic on motorways and carriageways

Traffic on motorways and carriageways as well as on approach and exit roads to/from such roads, may only occur with motor vehicles which, on a level road can and must be driven with a speed of 50 km per hour at least.

Item 2. Regardless of item 1, the police can allow driving with a flatbed truck if a transport cannot, with reasonableness, be performed in another way.

Item 3. Regardless of item 1, the police can allow driving as part of the execution of business from the nearest approach to the nearest exit on motorways and carriageways across fixed links (bridges and tunnels) with other motorized vehicles than those mentioned under items 1 and 2, if the driving cannot, with reasonableness, be performed in another way. Permission for driving with a moped on the mentioned stretches of road cannot be given.

Item 4. The Danish Minister of Transport can set rules on driving with motorized vehicles on motorways and carriageways according to item 3. Following negotiation with the Minister of Justice, the Danish Minister of Transport can set regulations on payment for police assistance, which according to the police’s estimate is required for the execution of such transport.

Section 45. Driving onto a motorway and carriageway may only be done at the start of the motorway and carriageway or by way of specially established approach roads.

Item 2. Driving off a motorway may only be done at the end of the motorway or by way of specially established exit roads.

Section 46. Driving over central reservations or through openings in these is not allowed.

Item 2. On motorways and approach and exit roads to such motorways, executing U-turns or reversing is not allowed. Stopping or parking outside of the indicated parking or lay-bys is not allowed. Stopping by an emergency telephone is, however, allowed with a view to using the emergency telephone. The Danish Minister of Transport can set rules on occasional stopping and parking of work vehicles that are not executing road work.

Item 3. If three or more lanes exist in the same traffic direction, cars with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons and combined vehicles, the length of which exceeds 7 metres, may only use one of the two lanes to the far right unless otherwise specified in Section 16, item 1.

Item 4. Road works on motorways as well as on approach and exist roads to such motorways, must be executed while demonstrating special caution. Vehicles that are used for road works must use one or more lamps which are clearly visible from all directions and display flashing yellow lights. If they are not covered by Section 44, item 1, they must drive to and from the work location by way of the nearest approach and exit roads.

Section 47. If a vehicle is forced to stop due to a traffic accident, engine failure or for another reason, the vehicle must be placed as far as possible outside of the roadway and then be removed from the motorway unless otherwise stated in the regulations in Section 9. If the vehicle is not removed immediately from the roadway, the driver must take the necessary precautions to warn other road users, see Section 31, item 2, points 3-5. The repair of the vehicle on site may only be done if necessary, in order to remove the vehicle from the motorway as soon as possible. While using the emergency telephone, the vehicle must be placed outside of the roadway as far as possible.

Item 2. If, in order to perform repair on-site, see item 1, point 3, it is necessary to use a part of the roadway, the police must be performed before commencing repair and they decide if the repair on-site can be initiated. Furthermore, the police must be informed beforehand if removal of a vehicle will occur by using a part of the roadway.

Item 3. The Danish Minister of Transport can set rules on the use of a mobile sign vehicle and other marking with the removal of a vehicle and with the execution of repair on-site.
